Georgia Railroad Collision

Van collides with Ford F150 Pickup and force of collision pushes pickup onto railroad track right in front of oncoming Norfolk Southern freight train. The pickup driver's door is jammed and he is unable to get out. Although the passenger was stunned by the force of the collision, he did get his door open and was just emerging from the truck when it was hit.

A camera mounted on the locomotive captured the final moment of the two men and we recreated the events by flying a drone to create a photogrammetric model of the scene.

Oakland Ghost Ship Warehouse Tragedy

An artists collective based in an old warehouse caught fire on December 2nd, 2016. Visual Law produced an interactive exhibit showing the configuration of the warehouse prior to the fire, as well as the location of fire's origin and the condition of the facility after the fire was extinguished.

We imported a special drone from Belgium that was capable of carrying a LIDAR scanner and we flew the scanner over the warehouse to collect high resolution data. We also conducted a two-day mission scanning the interior with a team of laser scanner operators to acquire as much 3D information as possible.

Molokini Crater (Maui) Snorkeling Fatality

On July 20, 2014 the remnants of a tropical storm WALI was bearing down on the Hawaiian Islands and had been publicized all week. Every operator of diving and snorkeling boats cancelled all trips for that day except for a single operator called The Scuba Shack. That morning the Scuba Shack sent its dive boat "The Double Scoop" out to Molokini crater with a group of scuba divers and a collection of tourists wishing to snorkel in the lagoon. The water was relatively calm when the boat left the dock at Kihei. We were able to acquire historical radar data for Maui and found that, indeed, there was a small window of calm when the voyage began (BELOW). You'll note that the inset image in the upper right hand corner shows the big picture and you can see the red and yellow turbulence marking the approaching storm:

When the storm hit all the divers were below the surface and several families were snorkeling near the boat. Waves quickly reached above 10 feet and a number of snorkelers were caught away from the boat. On the boat, the wife and children of a 50-year old father implored the captain to rescue the man who was clearly in great distress. The captain elected to stay in position because the diving party was still below the surface. Visual Law was asked to create a forensic visualization of the events in collaboration with oceanographers from the University of Hawaii. We rented a boat at dawn and flew a drone so we could create an accurate 3D model of the crater and its lagoon. The island itself is strictly off-limits and no survey has been recorded for its terrain. Thus, our work represented a new data set that we donated to the University.

BELOW: This is actual footage shot by one of the divers just as the storm began to hit. You can see several of the snorkelers struggling to make it through the waves to get back on board the boat. Wave conditions got much worse shortly after this. The oceanographers used this footage to calculate wave conditions and to build a model to simulate waves for our forensic video:

Crash of Singapore Airlines Flight 006 in Taipei

On Halloween night Singapore Airlines flight 006 was intending to take off bound for Los Angeles. The airport was buffeted by extremely heavy rain and winds from Typhoon Xangsane and the pilots mistakenly turned down a runway under construction instead of the main strip.  Just as the front landing gear began to lift up from the tarmac, the Boeing 747 struck an excavator and other construction equipment on the runway. Of the 179 passengers, 83 were killed and 39 suffered grave injuries. 32 had minor injuries and 25 were not injured. The survivors had to find their way out of the wreckage in the dark while the front portion of the airliner burst into flames.

Visual Law was commissioned to create a forensic animation showing the moment of impact to give an understanding of how quickly the castrophe occurred. This was one of our first forensic videos based on CAD modeling from blueprints. BELOW are some of the 3D models we built from scratch for the case:

CESSNA COLLISION WITH HIGH TENSION WIRES: GILROY, CA

A very experienced and well-trained United Airlines pilot was giving his granddaughter a scenic flight in his privately owned Cessna 140A. While flying through a valley they encountered unmarked high tension lines and died as a result of the collision. VISUAL LAW flew three drones to photogrammetrically map 2.5 square miles of the valley and then combined that data with U.S.G.S. topographic data to recreate the flight path of the Cessna. It was critical to prove that the pilot had no chance to recognize the wires before the collision so we visited the scene on the anniversary date of the collision and put a drone up just feet from the wires at the identical time as the collision so that lighting and shadow conditions would match. We then flew the drone backwards along the path the pilot had used and processed the footage so we could play it in reverse at the same speed as the aircraft to duplicate the pilot's view. The result was startling and proved he had less than half a second before the wires were visible.
